Server Down

January 2009

The Company

A new client came to us – a national tradeshow services contractor with a geographically diverse employee base had a server (whose functions included Active directory domain controller, Exchange email, file, print and line of business application service) fail late Thursday afternoon.

The Problem

The server would no longer start, let alone perform any of these critical business roles.

  • Internet Speed and Reliability
  • Server Infrastructure for File Sharing
  • Phone System and Firewall

The Solution

The server was removed to the NOVIX office, and in a manic 9+ hour (overnight) period of work, temporary storage system was setup, and the server was (re)installed with its operating system. Backup software was installed, and file service, Active Directory Authentication service, and the LOB application were restored from the last good backup provided by the client.

The server was returned the next day, and the client was able to go to work with some semblance of normalcy. The exchange email function was installed, and in/outbound mail flow was working through webmail. At the clients request over the following 2 days, historical email, and outlook functionality were restored.
